In trying to determine what pictures he has in his head, the poet Namdeo Dhasal offers some grim imagery of the underworld. Dhasal’s thematic naturalism has become a central part of Marathi modernist poetics, but the range of his imagination is at play in his collection.
‘Knowing the other is to look at oneself.’ Namdeo Dhasal is as sure-footed as he is empathic. Having decided to write poetry, he soon evolved his own aesthetic and, in the early seventies, tapped into the ‘underground’ of our time. He was competitive with the mainstream Marathi poetry scene, yet that same poetry became part of the Marathi canon. He began as an iconoclast and he still is. ‘The poet is a beggar who looks and speaks. There are no others but Namdeo Dhasal.’ So claimed his book editors.
This collection of poems reveals a remarkable mastery of the Marathi language. His command of the idiom and his powers of description in the field of the ordinary are nothing short of phenomenal. By his second collection, Moorkh Mhataryane, he has matured into a poet of incredible expressive power.
When he was still a student at the University of Marathi in Pune and a fellow at the University of Bombay, there was a poorly-written letter that came to light, offering Dhasal a scholarship, which led to a political protest by community groups. This is what he had to say:
