‘Knowing the other is to look at oneself.’ Namdeo Dhasal is as sure-footed as he is empathic. Having decided to write poetry, he soon evolved his own aesthetic and, in the early seventies, tapped into the ‘underground’ of our time. He was competitive with the mainstream Marathi poetry scene, yet that same poetry became part of the Marathi canon. He began as an iconoclast and he still is. ‘The poet is a beggar who looks and speaks. There are no others but Namdeo Dhasal.’ So claimed his book editors.
