2. Description of the Related Art
The human spine is a complex mechanical structure including individual bones called vertebrae coupled sequentially to each other by various dynamic and supportive ligaments, as well as by more static stabilizing structures. A healthy spine includes a plurality of vertebrae coupled to each other by both a anterior and posterior longitudinal ligament, as well as by the diskal pair of ligaments in the place of each intervertebral disc. Each intervertebral disc consists of a gelatinous center known as the nucleus pulposus and a thin outer annulus fibrosus comprised of a central fibrosus layer and two outer annular fibrosus layers. The annular fibrosus layers are connected to the vertebrae by means of a variety of ligaments.
The spinal column is the main support of the human body. It provides stability to the head and trunk and allows bending and twisting in multiple planes. The spinal column is formed by a plurality of bones called vertebrae and the spinal cord, which extends down the spinal column, through and protected by the bony vertebrae. The bony vertebrae, called vertebral bodies, mainly consist of a hard outer shell of cortical bone called the vertebral body and an inner core comprising a globular mass of cancellous bone called the vertebral body nucleus.
The intervertebral discs allow a motion between the vertebrae, such as bending, twisting, and sliding, and stabilize the spine by maintaining the curvature of the spine. The intervertebral discs comprise a resilient material called
