Phytotoxicity of Lead and Zinc Bismuth Layered Double Hydroxide Nanoparticles in Submerged Wetlands.
The release of Zn and Pb into the environment has resulted in great human and environmental health problems. In the present study, bismuth layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanoparticles (NPs) were successfully synthesized and applied as sorbents to remove Pb and Zn from simulated soil solutions. NPs with different stoichiometries were synthesized (OH/M2Al2CO3/NaAl2(OH)6·18H2O (δ-LDH), OH/MgAl2CO3/NaAl2(OH)6·18H2O (α-LDH), and OH/MgAl2CO3/H2O (β-LDH)) and the corresponding characteristics (e.g., morphology, particle size, specific surface area, and N2 adsorption-desorption analyses) were investigated to determine the physical properties. Furthermore, the phytotoxicity of different nanoparticles was investigated using the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana as a model test system. A single set of experimental conditions and a short exposure period were employed to determine the effect of NPs on plant growth in toxic and nontoxic conditions. The results showed that the inhibitory effects of the three LDH-NPs on plant growth could be concentration-dependent, and β-LDH-NPs exhibited the highest phytotoxicity among the three LDH-NPs under the present experimental conditions. The results also indicated that the inhibitory effects of the three LDH-NPs on plant growth were mainly the result of the accumulation of heavy metals in plants.
